According to neuropsychologist David Weeks having regular sexual activity does not only bring pleasure but can also make you look younger. Three sexual encounters a week can make you look 7 to 12 years younger.
What are the secrets to looking young?
David Weeks, a neuropsychologist at Edinburgh Hospital, Scotland, did his own little research. According to him, the most important way to help you look younger is to exercise regularly. A second option, although slightly less effective is to have an average of three sexual encounters a week.
Sex to stay healthy
Contrary to popular belief, sex among living beings is not practiced exclusively for reproduction. Many animals enjoy pleasurable sex outside fertile periods. However, man is one of the champions in this respect.
At the same time, the healthy side of sex should not be neglected. Because having orgasms regularly offers real advantages for survival. Enjoyment releases endorphins, natural painkillers which are very useful against migraines, for example. Two ejaculations per week would reduce the risk of death by half, according to a Welsh study from 1997. For women, having their breasts caressed could also reduce the risk of breast cancer, according to certain hypotheses.
The list of benefits is still long. To this list, we should add something that David Weeks’ team emphasizes: making women look younger. The neuropsychologist spoke briefly to the British Psychological Society about the results of his work.
Exercising and sex best for anti-aging
A total of 3,500 participants were recruited, men and women between the ages of 20 and 104 (with a significant number of over-50) who looked younger than their chronological age. They sat in a room and were asked about many parameters of their lives, but also about intimate moments. Behind a one-way mirror sat a six-member jury that had to estimate the age of each participant.
After analyzing the interviews, the authors noted that those who turned out to be the youngest were most physically active. The second secret of those that looked 7 to 12 years younger in the group was having sex on average three times a week. Less frequent sex doesn’t offer this advantage.
Other criteria like having social activities with people of your own generation, being married to a younger person or, for women, having hormone replacement therapy after menopause, seemed to also influence this parameter.
For David Weeks, these results reinforce his belief that it is beneficial to have sex throughout life. However, he criticizes society for spreading the idea that there is a time when we have to stop. “Sexual satisfaction is a major contributor to the quality of life just like spirituality and religion, so a more positive attitude toward the sexuality of older people should be vigorously promoted,” he says.
