Human intelligence depends on the potential for autonomous behavior, which is also essential to contemporary social life. Exogenous environmental elements and numerous endogenous factors influence human behavior. An essential component of endogenous action can be thought of as a dimension that ranges from rigid, clever, and innovative behaviors to conventional behavioral patterns like habits. The ability of human autonomy has frequently been studied in experimental tasks that explicitly direct individuals to act freely or randomly. These instructions are limited giving participants the avenue to conduct themselves in a way that demonstrates their knowledge of free will and volition. In contrast, people rapidly transition between more stereotypical and more autonomous behaviors outside of the lab without explicit training, depending on a variety of external and internal situational circumstances.

People are capable of breaking out from their habitual behavior
A study was carried out by a group of scientists to examine human autonomy and will in a competitive game where players were unable to respond to the moves of their opponents (stimulus independence), as well as gain greater compensation for avoiding the prediction of the competitor (habit independence). 159 participants of age range between 18-45 were used, some compensation was given and the experiment lasted for 30 minutes. Most people believe that humans are capable of autonomous behavior. This is key for survival and existence. To investigate when and how human activities can become autonomous, a new experimental paradigm and pipeline analysis were created. A new theoretical construct of adaptive autonomy was proposed.
