Rising Popularity of CBD for Wellness Products
Many people who knew anything at all about a constituent of cannabis or marijuana only knew of THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). This is the primary psychoactive compound in the plant. It is just one of numerous compounds known as cannabinoids found in the latter.
More and more people are now getting to know about another compound that may be more beneficial than THC. This one is called cannabidiol (CBD). The compound is non-psychoactive and offers a variety of health benefits.
If people were to be asked to mention one thing they know about cannabis, majority will probably talk about its tendency to cause a ‘high’ feeling. It makes users feel like they are on a different plane, mentally. This is both the reason some use it and why some abstain.
How about a cannabis constituent that is not psychoactive? You have CBD. Apart from its perceived benefits, this compound appeals to many because it doesn’t affect a person’s mental state the same way as THC.
There are two sources of cannabidiol, namely: marijuana plant and hemp plant. The amount of THC varies between this. Hemp plant, the most popular source, has less than 0.3 percent of the psychoactive ingredient. Marijuana-based CBD products, on the other hand, contain higher amounts.
Health and wellness uses
The popularity of CBD for health and wellness purposes has seen a significant increase in recent years. People mostly use the oil form. Products that feature it these days include face serum, coffee, pet food, gummy snacks and body lotion.
The approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Epidiolex, a CBD-based drug, probably contributed to the rising popularity of the compound. The medicine is for treatment of two rare forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. Recently, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reduced the drug’s restriction level to the lowest, on par with cough medicine.
There are different businesses offering CBD products for one purpose or another. There are offerings for fighting inflammation, promoting injury and sore healing, treating arthritis and managing cancer treatment pain, among others.
As a result of rising popularity of the compound, the CBD industry has seen considerable growth in recent years. Experts predict that the trend will likely continue for years to come.
As reported by USA Today, Greenwave Advisors, a marijuana research firm, forecasts that the value of the industry in America could rise to $3 billion by 2021. This could eventually get to about $200 billion if the bill seeking to legalize the hemp plant as a crop passes.
A heavyweight reported to be monitoring trend in the industry is Coca-Cola. The multinational drink company may soon offer a beverage containing the cannabinoid. It noted in a September statement that, just like many rivals, it was closely monitoring the growing use of CBD in wellness beverages across the globe.
There is no consensus on the legality of products containing this cannabis constituent. Laws on their sale vary at the federal and state levels. Epidiolex is the only product that federal enforcement agencies recognize as legal.
But it is lawful to sell products containing CBD from hemp plant in some states. The number of states where it is permitted for sale is higher than that of where medical marijuana is legal.
Majority of the states permitting the sale of CBD products only allow this for specific medical conditions. But it appears not much is being done by way of monitoring.
