Daily Coffee Consumption May Help Reduce the Risk of Heart Disease and Improve Overall Health

Coffee is a popularly consumed drink known for its capability to prevent sleep, edge focus, and boost the energy levels of consumers. Coffee consumption statistics show that about 30-40% of the world population consumes coffee daily.

Despite coffee being the second most popular drink in the world, many people are cautious about consuming the drink because of the health myths associated with it. For example, due to the heart quickening effect of caffeine, a content of coffee, it is advised that people with abnormal heart rhythms avoid drinking it.

Nevertheless, recent data presented at the 71st Annual Scientific Session of the American College of Cardiology have proven that drinking coffee, particularly two to three cups a day, is not only associated with a lower risk of heart problems but also with long and healthy living both for people with heart problems and those without.

Busting the coffee myth

For their studies, experimenters collected data from the UK BioBank, a large-scale prospective database with health information from over half a million people who were followed for at least 10 years. They analyzed the relationship between coffee consumption in varying situations, ranging from one to six cups and over daily, and problems in heart rhythm (arrhythmias); coronary heart diseases (CAD), heart failure, and stroke; as well as, heart-related deaths among people both with and without cardiovascular problems. A total of three studies were performed. The individuals were grouped based on the number of cups of coffee consumed daily and assessed via questionnaires completed upon entry into the registry.

The first study involved people without cardiac problems and hoped to understand the relationship between coffee drinking in healthy people and the development of cardiac problems or stroke during a 10 years follow-up. Researchers analyzed individuals and discovered a 10-15% reduced risk of developing heart problems or related death. This value was lowest in people who drank a cup and largest in people who drank 2 to 3 cups of coffee daily.

The second study involved individuals who had some cardiovascular problems. It was observed that people who drank 2 to 3 cups of coffee daily had a lower risk of dying than those who did not. The study also showed that people who drank coffee daily were at a lower risk of developing a problem in the cardiac rhythm, contrary to the misconception that coffee worsens heart problems, especially problems in rhythm.

For the third study, experimenters considered the differences between coffee and heart problems depending on whether the individuals drank instant or ground coffee or caffeinated or decaf. It was discovered that daily coffee consumption of about 2 to 3 cups was associated with reduced risks of cardiovascular problems irrespective of the type of coffee ingested. Still, caffeinated coffee yielded better results as decaf did not have positive effects on arrhythmia but did however help reduce cardiovascular issues except for heart failure.


This study proves that the popular myth about coffee causing or worsening cardiovascular problems is false. It’s advised that one consumes an average of 2 to 3 cups of regular coffee daily to boost energy, help metabolism, and alertness but most importantly, help and meliorate heart health.
