What is Anavar?
The generic name of Anavar is oxandrolone. It belongs to the class of compounds known as androgen and anabolic steroids (AAS). Oxandrolone is a derivative of the testosterone bi-product dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
This drug is a synthetic androstane steroid. It is an altered form of DHT, replacing a C2 carbon with an oxygen atom. Oxandrolone has close relations to certain other steroids, such as stanozolol, oxymetholone, and mestanolone.
Anavar is an androgen receptor agonist, just like other AAS, such as testosterone and DHT. But it is more anabolic than androgenic when you compare it to some other similar compounds. The drug is thought to be six times more potent as testosterone in terms of anabolic effect, but significantly lower in androgenic potency.
Oxandrolone was first synthesized in the early 1960s at Searle Laboratories, which Pfizer now controls. It was released as a pharmaceutical drug under the name Anavar a few years later.
The drug was in the good books of the United States Food and Drug Administration until it gained popularity for unapproved purposes. This would lead to its discontinuation by Searle Labs in the late 1980s.
Oxandrolone was re-released in the mid-1990s by Bio-Technology General Corporation (later known as Savient Pharmaceuticals). The company made it available under the brand name Oxandrin. The FDA granted it orphan drug status on the second release.
